TWENTY-EIGHT

I stand over her, eager to get her out of my home.

‘Chloe, you’d better go,’ I say.

‘But there’s more, Rachel.’

‘I don’t want to hear it,’ I reply, shaking with anger. ‘Just go, please.’

She seems surprised by my rage, which illustrates further how out of touch she is. She has no idea what she’s saying and how it’s making me feel. I realise now why she has no real friends. This is her MO: reel someone in, make them think she’s their friend and then try and make them as crazy and insecure as she is with elaborate lies.

‘So, you’re throwing me and Emily out?’

I nod, and staring at me in disbelief, she stands up. ‘Come on, Emily,’ she calls, listlessly. Ignoring Emily’s protests, she walks past the kids and moves robotically across the patio. By the time she reaches the kitchen, I’m behind her, and Emily has followed. I am escorting them out, wanting to make sure she leaves, that I actually watch her go – I don’t even trust her to do that now.

And just as we’re all walking towards the front door, I hear keys in the lock and Tom walks in.

‘Where have you been?’ I hear myself blurt out, accusingly.

‘I went to get some more wine, we’ve run out.’ He lifts the carrier bag he’s holding. I know Tom, and he’s making a point, that Chloe has drunk all the wine, but she doesn’t pick this up.

‘You shouldn’t have bought more wine on my account,’ she says presumptuously.

‘I didn’t,’ he says. ‘Are you guys leaving?’ He looks relieved.

She nods but says nothing.

‘Chloe has to get Emily back, don’t you?’ I can barely look at her, but I’m aware she’s making no move to go, just standing there.

She’s now looking at Tom with those big, victim eyes, and I wonder fleetingly if she’ll tweak the narrative of this afternoon for the nursery mums, alienating me even further.

‘Come on, Emily.’ Chloe grabs her niece, who’s still objecting to this unexpected early departure.

‘You said we could go in the swimming pool,’ she whines.

‘No, I didn’t!’ Chloe’s face flushes; she obviously did.

‘You did, you promised we could go in!’ Emily screeches at her.

I’ve never given any invites for the pool. Chloe knows it’s way out of my comfort zone. So why would she promise Emily?

‘Shut UP!’ Chloe’s saying through clenched teeth, but Emily shakes her off and runs back out into the garden. Chloe’s now storming after her. ‘We can go in another day,’ she’s saying in a low voice.

‘You promised me today.’

‘I know but…’ Chloe’s looking over to see if we’re listening, then lowers her voice so I don’t hear any more of the argument until Emily screams, ‘You’re a bitch!’

This takes my breath away. Tom and I look at each other with wide eyes – now I know where Sam’s newly expanded vocabulary has come from.

Tom rolls his eyes and wanders through to the kitchen now, abandoning this horrible mess. I stand and wait for them to return and leave.
